Description
An iconic cultural landmark in Taipei’s vibrant Ximending neighborhood, the Red House Theater (紅樓劇場) has served as a community cornerstone since its opening in 1908. Originally built as a public market under Japanese rule and later transformed into a theater, today it anchors Taiwan’s LGBTQ+ scene and creative arts culture. With two floors of independent shops, art galleries, cafés, and a 200-person performance hall complete with a 5×7 m stage, the venue thrives with live concerts, drag shows, film screenings, community mixers, and pop-up cultural events.
The open-air plaza behind the theater hosts multiple outdoor bars and communal seating, marked by rainbow flags and a lively, inclusive atmosphere—central to Taipei Pride celebrations, Taiwan’s annual gay New Year’s Eve countdown, and grassroots queer film screenings. Operated by Taipei Cultural Foundation since 2007, the Red House blends historic charm and modern queer culture, offering safe, vibrant space for LGBTQ+ gatherings, community mixers, and artistic activations in one of Asia’s most open cities
